This is a Vancouver City Council By-Election. By-elections are held to fill vacancies between general elections. Two city councillors recently resigned their seats, so the April 5th vote will be for two seats on City Council. You get two votes.
It matters because if Ken Sim’s ABC candidates win, Ken Sim will be stronger, and will be able to sell us out to his rich friends easier and faster.
If COPE wins, we can expose him for what he’s doing and slow down his billionaire-backed agenda. -
Voting is easy. Polls will be open on April 5 at 25 locations 8am to 8pm, including City Hall and most community centres. Plus there are early voting days March 26 or April 1st at City Hall. You can also vote by mail!
If you’re 18 years old as of April 5, a Canadian citizen who lives in Vancouver and who’s lived in BC for at least 6 months – you can vote!

Unfortunately, yes. In Vancouver, property owners who don’t live here are allowed to vote in our elections just because they are rich. That needs to end.
In fact, renters were not even allowed to vote in Vancouver until pressure from tenant organizations and organizations like COPE changed that in the 1970s. -
Advance voting is open on March 26 and April 1 from 8am to 8pm at City Hall at 12th and Cambie.
If you vote in advance voting, one benefit is you can volunteer for COPE on election day! -
Data shows landowners and the rich vote at higher rates than the rest of us. The last Vancouver by-election in 2017 had only 11% voter turnout. That means your vote for Sean Orr and COPE this election really matters.
One way you can help us boost turnout of regular working people is to sign up for the People’s Megaphone and ask your friends to vote. -
Yes. Ken Sim’s ability to govern is going to be strongly affected by this outcome. If we elect Sean Orr and COPE, we can hold his feet to the fire, expose him and his billionaire backers, make it harder for his votes to pass, and make his last year and a half as Mayor absolutely miserable.
Then, we can build a movement to Evict Ken Sim in 2026. -
